What We Do

Alston Moor Parish Council is the ‘parish authority’ for Alston Moor

PARISH COUNCILS form the tier of local government closest to the communities they represent; they are the “third tier” in counties such as Cumbria which have district as well as county councils.  They have surprisingly wide discretionary powers, but very small budgets available to exercise them

ALSTON MOOR PARISH COUNCIL looks after the easternmost part of Cumbria, high in the North Pennines, bordering Northumberland and County Durham. Its eastern situation, isolated from the main part of the county, is reflected in its inclusion in both the diocese of Newcastle, and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In addition the parish council is the sole trustee of Alston Town Hall, and parish councillors are trustees to the Fairhill Estates Charity.

There are two other councils that provide services to Alston Moor;

Cumbria County Council

Cumbria County Council covers the whole of Cumbria. Alston Moor is its most easterly parish. Cumbria has responsibility for roads, schools and social care amongst other things.

Eden District Council

Eden District Council is one of six District Councils in Cumbria and Alston Moor is on its easterly edge. Eden District Council is the planning authority. It keeps the streets clean and is responsible for refuse collection.

As a parish or town council, we have an overall responsibility for the well-being of the local community. Our work covers these main categories;

  • Representing the local community.
  • Striving to improve quality of life in Alston Moor.
How does it happen?

Alston Moor Parish Council is made up of 15 Councillors, who meet regularly to make decisions on the work and direction of the Parish Clerk and other staff.

Attending a council meeting is the best way to find out what we do.  You can also find out more about the council by having a look around our website and following us on social media.
